Course Description: Reading and discussion of special topics in economics.

2007 Topics: Operator, Transportation, and Algebraic Methods in Econometrics

This topics course will cover three basic themes this year: 1. Operator methods, focusing on solutions of ill-posed operator equations occurring in the instrumental variables analysis. 2. Transportation methods, focusing on the Monge-Kantarovich problem in the quadratic case. Here we will discuss Ivar Ekeland’s lecture notes and related work on hedonic models as well as applications of rearrangements in econometrics. 3. Algebraic methods, focusing on the basic ideas of the emerging field of algebraic statistics.
